Solve for x: Call for problems
June 26, 2010 at CoCo coworking & collaborative space in St. Paul.

“If there was a problem yo I’ll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it”
-Robert Van Winkle

This is our fourth UnSummit, the unique unconference answer to local technology, interactive marketing events. We usually formulate a theme to help contributers think about how to approach UnSummit. “Hacking the Recession” and “What’s Next?” were past themes where we looked to you, our community for ideas. This year with Solve for x, we’re looking for problems. We’d like you to bring us your problems and together, as a community, we’ll brainstorm to solve for x where x= your problem.

So in the comments below, tell us about your unique problem (and whether or not you’d be interested in facilitating that discussion) and we’ll get to work on the schedule. As usual there will be room for additions, so you may also bring your ideas, problems, and discussions on June 26th. So tell us. What is your x?

x=Minnesota’s tech startup culture.

I would be interested in facilitating a discussion focused on the convergence of marketing and tech startups, framed around a question (such as): “How can the the marketing/media industry and the startup community collaborate for greater reward?”

Thoughts/comments welcome…

X=The stigma of social media being useless or unimportant for everyone.

Social Media is the what bridges out online life/relationships with out personal life.

Thought/comments are always welcome…

Thanks for the idea Jeff. I’m sure it this session will be well attended. I hope to attend, so I can bring up my usual theme, which is that perhaps we need to think beyond Web and mobile and look for opportunities in other sectors, such as Retail (lots of great retail talent in these towns), Medical devices and plastics (sorry, heard it in a movie once). But you get the idea: let’s open things up, because we’ll never be the Valley, so why try?

I think the real potential for breakthrough ideas comes through hybridization: combining some of the region’s historical strengths: Retail, Advertising, Medical Devices, Digital Imaging, IT, Financial Services, Healthcare, etc.

So, for me, the question is how can we get entrepreneurs from different verticals to start talking to each other. Who knows…maybe we’ll end up with a company making medical implants that talk to us via Twitter! (I jest…kind of).

The problem I want to solve for is this:

How can freelancers, consultants and other sole practitioners, who basically make a living by selling their time, get out of this trap? How can we break the shackles of wage slavery by creating products, subscription services, and in other ways turning our ideas into sources of passive income?

Among others, I hope Joseph Rueter and Tim Brunelle will attend this and talk about the pros/cons of building Curation Station.

X = Digital Identity
What’s the state of your digital identity? How many relationships do you have in the digital space? In the real world you are an individual as well as a member of your family and other institutions. The current state of digital identity doesn’t work as well as the non-digital one. With all this great technology we should be able to improve upon the idea of identity yet it is currently in bad shape. I have some ideas but I’d like to hear yours so that we can solve the problem before it’s too late.

Pete!! Brilliant. x= online identity

mine is in flux and I need help

x = importance.

it’s so easy to get distracted. New things are shiny and fun. Importance persists. As a broad, unfair, generalization – the MN web/tech/marketing community is pragmatic. What does an even more pragmatic culture look like? Can we own – ‘what really works?’

Social Media as a Networking Tool….

I second two earlier requests, either X=hybridization or X=importance.

Interesting.

I really like this solve for x theme. The synergies between the marketing and tech talent in town is something I’ve often rhapsodized about, some even with some of you. X=pragmatic synergy (See how I did that? 2 for 1)

x=how do I balance incoming channels without feeling overwhelmed? what is “connected enough”?

I’d be happy to facilitate a discussion on how to balance technology use while not being consumed or overwhelmed by it.

x = balance between social media networking with other professionals and customers

Type your comment here.I not good at the X = math but how about

Is there such a thing as privacy if we use social media. Where is the line between public and private? Can we be authentic and still separate business and personal? What do we do when the boundaries are crossed? How do we get our lives back?

I agree with Don’s hybridization problem. We have such a significant wealth of talent/innovation/knowledge in the health, financial and agriculture sectors here in Minnesota, yet we fail to communication and collaborate.

Leverage Mobile Marketing Effectively: the unstoppable Lisa Foote and I will be share a case study that wraps in mobile list building, mobile web integration and a few surprises. We’ll look at best practices, research and other goodies.

X = mobile internet. With mobile internet passing desktop internet in 2-3 yrs. – what does this mean for businesses and how they market themselves? & specifically how does this apply for B2B companies?

x = “E-Mail”

I’m going to explain how to use it.

Either that or the telephone.

A session before 2pm would be helpful. I’m a busy man with loads of other speaking engagements.

X=effective content strategy (brand and personal perspectives).

X=content aggregation (how do we filter through the mass amount of content available to us? What tools can we use? What role do brands play?)

X=online privacy issues (not necessarily just Facebook)

X=Feeding the blog beast (how do you find the time and resources to keep your blog going from week to week?)

I mentioned this to Don and sent email to Meg but…

x = Practical Opacity vs. Radical Transparency — Embracing Your Online Introvert

Basically, strategies to set limits on your online interactions while at the same time using that new focus to create deeper and more valuable relationships. How to get more signal and reduce noise. Also, paying more attention to the value you are trying to provide to others.

X=Digital Company Culture

When our employees live online how much should/do you embrace? What do you mean you’re talking about your job online? What do you mean you can access Facebook even though we blocked it?

How does it all work?

I don’t have a topic, I just want to facilitate the session opposite of any session Jake Nyberg facilitates. I love a good challenge, just like last year.

x = creating a very (hyper) local community with online resources

Getting news and information about your local community has always been problematic since we all started spending more time at work than at home. Neighborhood papers were sort of a solution but relied on The Editor(s) to tell you what is and isn’t news and was rarely able to include all the notices and minutes from community meetings large and small. The Web seemed like a good solution but twentieth-century funding models (read: “advertising”) are struggling and both the newspapers and community web sites are going out of business.

So how can we create a sustainable hyperlocal online presence in the twenty-first century?

My Knight News Challenge ProposalMy session on topic at Minnebar

Would anyone be interested in a session on live analytics and how I use that to measure and adjust social media work for clients?

Oh, where X = measuring social media.

I was never good at X= math.

X=Analytics Integration – How can we compile the various analytics data from Website traffic, marketing campaign activity, and social engagement into one dashboard that integrates all data into an understandable whole?

x = relevance.

How do we ensure that what we do is relevant for our clients? Without relevance, what’s the point?

X = How do I get hipsters to dig my music?

I am interested in leading a discussion on strategies bands might utilize to gather the ever-fickle and ever-powerful attention of Hipsters. How do we get Vita.mn to write about us? How do we get The Current to play our music? Does any of this really matter?

Session to be followed by Oreo cookies.

Solve for X = Enough.

Are you working Enough? Making Enough? Media-socializing Enough? Got Enough stuff? Having Enough fun? Or would you even know Enough if it bit you in the butt?

Join Kirk Horsted of makeyourbreakaway.com and 2 Heads as he opens up another 12 pack of (un)Summit queries. We’ll ask, rant, pant and debate about when Enough = Enough in SM, tech intake, work output, screen time, down time, Surly/Summit and eversomuch more.

X = Networking nearest neighbors online

We’ve started convening around an open source project idea called http://neighbor.be

Which is part of our larger mission about how do we use technology to build local engagement in local communities:
